2011 Recap

We consider 2011 as our year as blessings pour down on our way continuously since the year began. Gil officially asked me to marry him January during our 3^rd year Anniv trip at Kinabuhayan Café. The wedding was supposedly December of this year, or the same January 18^thbut seemed like God has a better plan for us, as always.

February was a busy month spent with work and preparation for our 1^st time out of the country trip, Singapore-Malaysia second week of March. Good thing we were sponsored by Gil’s best friend Dhel and so we had free accommodation along with unlimited treats and freebies (Yey!). I only stayed for 5 days because of work while Gil stayed for two weeks, the first week to accompany me strolling around and the last week to apply for work. He started sending out applications after I left Singapore and during that one week, he got the job! He went back to Pinas to resign from his almost 10 years job at Hitachi Plant Technologies, Ltd. and went back to Singapore 2^nd week of April, after we have completed all our wedding requirements.

And so I was left alone preparing for the wedding, earlier than planned as he wanted me in Singapore with him the soonest (malungkot daw kz mag-isa). I was then at Shell Oil Company (SBSC) and the flexible time really helped me to still attend to some wedding errands as meeting suppliers and the like. Yes, it was indeed wedding-in-a-bliss!

My groom arrived to Pinas Friday, the day before the wedding (parang guest lng! Lol!). As soon as he arrived, we went out to buy our wedding ring along with his long sleeve, neck tie, shoes and hanky. Kami na ang super prepared! Lol!

The wedding was held Saturday night June 18, 2011. It was not a perfect wedding, neither the kind of wedding we have planned and imagined, but we owned that night as we share our vows and love with our dearest ones. Nothing could ever be more romantic in our lives’ journey than that not-so-perfect not-as-planned night. It was not anymore me and Gil, but US—as one!

Two days after the wedding, we flew to Singapore and started our lives together as married couple. Gil has his work and I got mine two months after.

Diwali: The Festival of Light

Deepavali (Diwali), also known as "Row of Lights", marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year based on Lunar Calendar. The name itself derive from Sanskrit; Dipa means lamp, and Awali means row. -source here.

As Singapore participates with India's Deepavali festival, the working people including me and Gil rejoice as this day was declared holiday. The past few weeks been so stressful that a day-off would favor our much awaited us time--rest and shopping-on-a-budget at that. And yes, more movie time at home.

We flew to Singapore 2 days after our wedding, June 20, 2011. I was not actually into looking for a job but since our NSO marriage contract is not yet available until now, the supposedly Dependant’s Pass is not possible. The first week was spent for mere vacation, rest and food trip. Tuesday the following week, I decided to update my resume and started sending out applications via email. I had few interviews within the 1^st month, but seem they’re not really for me as one could only apply for my pass on September while my Social Visit pass will already expire August 19. The other one asked me to relocate to Jurong East area as the work may need me to report in no time.

I’ve been the family’s bread winner since then being the eldest and being a total bum and dependent is not me. Those two months had been the most challenging months for me, as I found myself depressed at times, crying and talking with myself about how my life would go now. I could never be this dependent to my husband the whole time. I only have barely two weeks when another company called up, the day when I was really sick with colds, tonsillitis and severe cough and phlegm. Susan, the HR called up lunch time asking me to report for an interview that same day at 5pm. “Today?” I asked. “I was sick today!” I heard Susan chuckled. But yes, I still went to the interview which turned out to be the best Sg interview I had which somehow made me feel confident and important.

The following day was a holiday, Singapore’s National Day. Gil and I were surprised to receive a call from Susan asking me to start work the following day, Wednesday. The pass will be filed that same day as well. Mixed emotions it was! I cried! I never lose hope and faith in Him that I believe in His every will and plans for me…for us.

My first day at work was not the usual first day of an employee. It was my busiest first day ever! It helped that I was with a construction company before, very similar with my Hitachi Plant Technologies, Ltd. role- as an Accounting Assistant, this time assistant to the Singaporean Accounts Manager.

Having my pass approved was not as easy as I thought it would be. The first apply was rejected—as they were already thinking of just paying me for the days I’ve worked. But thanks to my manager who believes in me and asked HR to re-apply again, this time with a higher salary rate than the previous rate applied. She said it could be with the salary rate and the position as well. So they re-applied from an Accountant position down to Accounting Assistant but from an okay salary rate to a higher, more favorable rate. :)

The 2^nd application was done Friday, and I only have 1 week left to stay. Comes Thursday the following week (2 days before my stay expires), my pass was approved! To my surprise, I had the Medical Exam that same day. Truth is, if there’s one thing I’m so not confident about, it’s the X-ray. I have Fibrotic Infiltrates- medical term for lung scarring brought about by previous lung issues. Though it’s only minimal and I’ve already undergone medications, it has always been an issue since I always need medical certificate with me or films to show lung stability during my Philippine employment. How much more in a foreign land as Singapore?

I don’t know if it was the medical certificate from Makati Med, or the radiologist being a Filipino, or God’s will and faith that my X-Ray was clear! No traces of scars, whatsoever! But personally, I consider that as miracle, testimony of God’s unspeakable love and graces.

My pass was issued August 18, exactly a day before my Short term visa expires. We only got few days left but we never visited any airlines’ websites for flight bookings. Gil and I were tensed, yes, but we firmly believed I would come up with the job God has prepared for me that will allow me to stay legally in Singapore with my husband. It has been a challenging journey, but we knew we’re safe and heading on the right track since He’s with us, always.

From a relaxing Lake Pandin cruise, we rode on a jeep bound to San Pablo city proper. Little did we know that then was the town’s fiesta so we were greeted by side by side traffics and flea markets on the streets. Few streets from the church are the jeeps bound to Candelaria Quezon, the trip that will pass by Tiaong Quezon. From Tiaong is another ride going to our destination, Dolores Quezon.

We failed to catch the last trip from Tiaong New Market to Dolores thus our last option of a special tric ride for P150 (plus P50 tip). Landmark of Kinabuhayan Café is Dolores Central School, few walks along Dejarme St and you’ll find the quaint café.

To be honest, we were not impressed with the place at first. On the center of the restaurant is a billiard table, on both corners are two tables (one of which I think is the only one being used—the one we actually used in our 2 days stay). Dry cat’s coating was hanging on the wall, candelabras with melted candles, pictures of an ermitanyo looking man on the old big mirror.

Then the same person appeared from the kitchen who welcomed us with his unbelievable perfect English accent. He was Jay Herrera--the person of character, the owner and the chef. Don’t get me wrong, I already saw him on some videos and blogs, but meeting him in person is something. But since we were too tired from commuting, we asked for our ‘room’ first for some rest. Good thing we never expected too much on this trip…and glad to be surprised all along…

THE CANDLELIT DINNER

An hour later, we were called by Ralph-Jay’s assistant informing us that the dinner’s ready. Ralph was already lighting the candles when we came in. Soon, they came out from the kitchen and prepared our table. Few minutes later and the foods came in...

We already started the dinner when the anticipated airing of Jessica Soho’s feature of Kinabuhayan Café started. It was something like blogger Anton Diaz’ most recommended foods. Just imagine our ‘wow’ and hiyawan as Jay appeared and showcased how he makes his Risotto al Fungi. We’re glad we were able to watch the feature and taste the goodness of it in one sitting. The risotto was undoubtedly heaven! It was after we had that dinner and tasted the risotto that everything became pleasing to our eyes…it was such a romantic place pala!

We retired for the night after few hours and had one of the best nights of our lives in our humble open-air-hut. We asked for an electric fan pa pero di rin nmin nagamit kz super lamig pala pag madaling araw aside from malakas ang hangin that night we thought bumabagyo na.

THE PLACE

The following day, we were able to capture the beauty of the place. I on my old Canon Ixy and Gil on his Canon Kiss. (I should have posted Jay's pets as well namely Chongki and Muning--the dogs and the famous Onion--the porky pet, but I'm having some prob with Picasa Web storage.Will just try to update this post the soonest).

THE ROOM

We stayed on this two-storey open-air-nipa hut. First floor is an open area with hammock, bamboo sala set, books on the wooden bookshelves where the stairs are attached going to the second floor which is basically an open area for the mattress on the bamboo floor and the huge ‘kulambo’.

The CR is located right at the back of the wall, an open space for the usual toilet amenities. High walls surround the place though (but we’re not at all comfortable thus we manage to use one of the blankets as cover. Hehe!)

Staying at Kinabuhayan Café has no time limit. We were instructed to take our time as they don’t have check-in and out thus we had our breakfast at around 10am, ansarap kayang matulog! Hehe!

THE BREAKFAST

Breakfast was a special tosilog (tocino, herbed sinangag and vegetable pancake). Dessert was a wonderful kiwi in cream dressing plus another pitcher of kapeng barako. A great way indeed to start the day!

THE KUBLI SPRING

We requested for a Kubli Spring visit to swim and for the supposedly lunch but we decided to just have the lunch back at the café. Kuya Arnold, our driver cum tour guide arrived as we’re having the breakfast. So as soon as we finished the meal, we packed our things up and head on the trek to find the once hidden Kubli Spring.

Kubli Spring is an ideal picnic location for families. As we arrived, there was already a group in the spring, some were preparing to grill fish while others are cooking on pots above the rocks. Good thing we were told by Kuya Arnold to walk ahead for a more private spot of the spring. There we felt like having the entire place all by ourselves as we’re enjoying the cool water fresh from Mt. Banahaw.

Current was strong on some parts that we needed to be extra careful. It’s not that we’re not really good swimmers, but big rocks were all over the place we’re afraid to hit one on some careless steps. We enjoyed swimming and listening to Kuya Arnold’s stories that we stayed for around 3hours.

THE LAKE GUNAW

Kuya Arnold suggested if we wanted to see Lake Gunaw. Since it’s along the way, we decided to pay a visit. Along the way, we passed by a dalandan tree where we took some fruits, fresh from the tree. I suddenly miss the times na pupunta kmi sa lolo ko sa Bicol, ang daming bunga ng mga puno. Buhay probinsya…nakakamiss…

THE FAREWELL LUNCH

Few minutes more and we’re on our way already back to the café, still wet and cold. We just dressed up and packed our things up and head on to the restaurant where our late lunch was waiting. We’re actually anticipating for a wonderful meal but we were surprised to have all these served to us:

After the meal, we went inside Jay’s kitchen for a souvenir photo with him and were amazed how organized and neat his place was. Then I understand the meaning of passion…

This trip is definitely one of the best trips we’ve had. We never set high expectations for this trip but we ended up satisfied as we anticipate for our next trip back. We had the relaxations we’ve been longing in the first place and the place is very near Manila area as commuting is very well manageable. We’re able to breathe fresh air as we commune with nature and have found great people along the way. Above all, the bonding Gil and I had is beyond compare. It’s just so nice waking up in the morning with your dearest beside you as he stares in your eyes saying ‘Pakasal na tayo?’

Soothing Lake Pandin Cruise + lunch

I’m back…I’m so back!!! I won’t get into details anymore of how busy I’ve been lately for that’s obvious. Our thank you to those people who’ve visited and made us feel special and loved despite of my ‘absence.’ *Huggs* And though I’ve been itching to post my new entry for 2011, I wanted to save the seat for our 3^rd year Anniv trip…thus this post.

We’re always looking forward for January not only because of the new hopes for New Year…but another year for Gil and I as a couple. Apart from our usual itinerary-based getaway, we wanted this time to just relax, to inhale some fresh air from urban settings and simply to commune with nature. Our first destination: Lake Pandin.

Lake Pandin is one of the seven lakes (pitong lawa) located at Sto. Angel San Pablo Laguna, around 3 hours travel from Manila.

Lake Pandin is located 15-minutes trail trek from the highway. We were escorted by Aling Siona-0929.9789565, wife of Mang Tano who is the president of the Samahang Mangingisda ng Lawa ng Pandin (SMLP). The idea is a lake tour in a bamboo raft while having your lunch of the locals’ specialties. At the end of the trek is the soothing view of the lake (worth it sa mejo hingal at pawis na lakad). Breath-taking as I may say so!

After changing clothes, we we’re led to one of the bamboo rafts where our lunch was waiting. The view was so calming that before we knew it, we were already sailing. Our bamboo raft was being paddled by five nice ladies: Ate Siona, Marichu, Tina, Malou and Evelyn. On a separate banca is Kuya Ato and Mang Rene, the Brgy Tanod and our guards from afar.

Our late lunch was being prepared too by them. On the table were:

Ginataang hipon (smaller than the usual)

Ensaladang Pako (Fern salad)

Inihaw na tilapia (freshly caught tilapia from the lake)

The ginataang hipon was the most notable food for me. Ang sarap! Gil will always be on the tilapia side. Our first time with Ensaladang Pako which is Gil’s Nay’s favorite pla (sana nagbaon kami). Btw, super siksik nung rice as in 1 pa lng busog ka na. Best to be eaten ‘kamayan’ style!

After few minutes, we parked by the shady corner of the lake to rest. And as we’re enjoying the foods, we’re also enjoying the stories of the locals. Tamang kwentuhan lng, ang simple…super probinsya feel.

Tall trees and lush greens surround the lake, the water was still and calm, the food tastes good and the people were nice and friendly. Two things: you’ll be tempted to dip in the water or you’ll be on your deep slumber. :)

We thought the trip was done when they ask if we want to see the nearby lake, Lake Yambo. Who are we to refuse? Our privilege to have Aling Siona to guide us (bihira daw kz magguide ng guests sa Yambo lake si Aling Siona). There we learn a lot about her and Mang Tano. Aling Siona is one of the kindhearted people I’ve met, ang simple lang!

Lake Yambo offers another picturesque scenery. I just imagine how relaxing taking a nap in this area as the air was cool and the scene was perfect!

On our way back, we passed by this area with Mama Mary’s grotto and a bamboo ‘salulo’ where locals get natural water coming from the mountain for drinking.

Gil had his most anticipated chance to paddle as one of the Ates pull the guide rope instead.

I still couldn’t help to look back on the lake shore and be mesmerized with the natural beauty of the lake. As to Aling Siona, the number of residents along the shore was enough already, the limits being monitored by the local government to preserve the natural beauty of the lake. We knew it we’ll be back again…with the hope that the same serene and untouched Lake Pandin awaits us, even years from now.

A 'balsa tour' or bamboo raft tour is P180/person. Lunch is optional at an additional P180/person but we highly recommend this! They also accommodate group tours. All tours must be in advance notice.

To go to Lake Pandin via commute:

1. Ride a bus bound to Lucena, Calauag or any bus sign that will pass by San Pablo. Take off at San Pablo Medical Hospital and ask a tricycle to take you to Brgy. Sto. Angel. Special ride range from Php80-150.

2. From San Pablo City proper, ride a jeepney bound to 'ILOG' near the San Pablo Church and ask the driver to drop you off Sto. Angel, Lake Pandin sign (see sign below). Fare is Php17.

MOP: Jellyfishing + Sea Lion show & Habitat

JELLIES MUSEUM- The Dancing Sea Fairies

Coming from an enjoyable Oceanarium tour, we were expecting a lot in this jellyfish meet-up. It's located at the ground floor, left wing coming from the main entrance (but since we came from the Oceanarium, we were led to 2^nd floor exit passing along fish spa, restaurants and souvenir shops. Down the escalator is the Jellies museum.

What I like about this is the soothing music as you inspect the giant tubes of jellies. They were lovely sea fairies no doubt. The museum was darker than the Oceanarium as lights illuminate only from the tubes.

My sisses and bro didn’t enjoy much in this part unlike Bebe. He was amazed as he ran from one tube to another. Good thing we were the only visitors that time so there’s no fear he might just get lost or any.

MARINE LIFE SANCTUARY

We were 15mins late to the Sea Lion show at 2pm so we decided to visit their habitat first located outside the building, across the promo tickets booth. Here's where we learned more about these mammals. Several posters were posted in the area as they were gracefully swimming in the giant pool.

We stayed here for few minutes but though Bebe seems to be enjoying watching them, he kept on saying “Gutom na Bebe…am am na!” I planned of taking them to MOA for the late lunch but since we haven’t seen the Sea Lion show yet, we decided to just choose among the few restaurants within the area, thus we landed at Gerry’s Grill.

Since our eyes feasted on fishes already, we had pork choices of Nilagang Bulalo, Pork Sisig, Inihaw na Liempo and Adobo rice aside from the 3 cups of plain rice.

Bebe was so gutom ang sama na nang tingin nya sa foods after i-serve haha! :)

We were able to tour around again the souvenir shops and let our Bebe choose what he wants. Smart Bebe for choosing a cute (and cheap) jellylike stuff, P20 lng hehe! I’ll buy him a nemo stuff toy next time! ^^

SEA LION SHOW

Then the much awaited Sea Lion Show. We were the early ones who took the front seats for better view. Few minute more and the place was crowded already of co-expectators who wanted to be amazed with these mammals’ tricks.

By the way, don’t be surprised if photographers will approach you for ‘free’ pictures. Posing and shots were actually free, but the print-outs were pricey (they will never let you have soft copy for sure). What you have to do is just pose and smile! J

After the short introduction of the host, two cutey sea lions came out with their trainers then the show began. Good thing I was able to capture some of their amazing tricks before the cam’s battery runs out.

Bebe who’s obviously sleepy before the show started became energetic and focused. Here's where everybody actually enjoy, though I find it ‘bitin.’ I hope viewing time could be extended to say, an hour instead of only thirty minutes. And yes, more amazing tricks for the sea lions to perform. :)

TIPS for 1st timers like us: Only the sea lion show has time limit of thirty minutes. Take your time especially once inside the oceanarium and jellies. Relax, savor every minute and experience breathing with these underwater creatures. Best to be experienced with your families especially with kids around.

Manila Ocean Park: The Oceanarium

A lot of things have poured down my way lately (one of the reasons why I actually been in hiatus stage for sometime now). I never knew 3 out of my 5 major goals this year will materialize, one of which was to find a greener pasture (I hope to make another entry for that soon).

As I received my first ever pay in my new company, I took my siblings and my cutest nephew out to Manila Ocean Park last weekend, the bonding I long been wanting to do. It’s also a chance for Bebe (my nephew—Gene Gabriel) to finally meet Nemo in person as he is a certified fan (I lost count already of how many times he watched that movie—as in all day and all night bago matulog!) Exagge!

Regular rate for Oceanarium Zone Tour is P400 for adults and P350 for kids but they offer promo tickets of additional attractions for a discounted price. And since we’re there in a Sunday and with a baby with us, I chose to have the Marine Life Encounter offering access to Jellyfish museum, Marine Life habitat and Sea Lion show aside from the Oceanarium as we need to get back home before it gets dark. Promo tickets could be availed outside the hall, left side before the entrance.

OCEANARIUM ZONE TOUR

Oceanarium Zone is composed of seven parts: Agos, Bahura, Laot, Buhay na Karagatan, Ang Kalaliman, Pagi and Pating, first part of which is Agos.

Bebe was so overwhelmed with lots of ‘Nemos’ around him. I knew it he’ll enjoy this experience.

Then came my most awaited part, the Buhay na Karagatan were you’ll be in a tunnel as if breathing underneath the ocean with colorful fishes and seawater creatures with you. We waited for the tunnel to get empty for some good group pics (I actually brought my tripod) but to my surprise, people tend to multiply like mushrooms to this part of the place.

I thought they were just looking at some gorgeous underwater creatures but no, they were actually watching this:

Sneaking (and enjoying) live telecast of Manny Pacquaio’s fight over Margarito. (Lucky by-passer visitors for the free viewing (I learned that per head’s viewing was priced at P800 bundled with buffet brunch and drinks).

We still had nice shots though, thanks to my tripod! :)

As everybody was busy watching the fight (including my bro and sisses), I was amazed by this group of fishes. It was so relaxing watching them. Paikot ikot lang sila, walang kapaguran. I took a 10sec video of it as a souvenir (Naaliw tlga ako!)

Pating part was my Bebe’s favorite to our surprise! Haha!

Near the exit of the Oceanarium is the kids’ zone with kiddies’ chairs, tables and learning materials.

I was glad we were able to push through this bonding. My sister Yca actually lives with my parents in Quezon as well as Bebe thus I see to it I tour them around whenever possibe. So if you're looking for a different family experience, Manila Ocean Park is definitely a great choice.

Gil's National Day

It's Gil's National Day today and as I thought we could all have the anticipated holiday today, I was awakened from a deep slumber. Kiddin!*

Bought the cake from the nearby convenience store and glad to find few bites left of Toblerone I just had this afternoon courtesy of CheChe. I sliced the toblerone chocos into bits and decorated the mini cake for some personal touch. While we're having this voicecall, I excused to pee and proceed lighting the mini candle, and as soon as the clock struck at 11pm (Japan's an hour ahead), I showed the cake and sang a warm Happy Birthday song. Glad to see him surprised and happy! :)

...sounds corny ne? Who cares?! I damn miss him!

I suddenly miss blogging. I was too occupied for some time now since Gil's been out of the scene but I still take time to read posts once in a while.

Just for an update, I've been to Gumaca Quezon-my hometown for two consecutive months, last month to attend to my nephews 2nd birthday and last long weekend for more quality time with my family, which I consider a rare scenario since I only got to spend time with them during long holidays since I started working. But what's 6 hours of land travel anyway? Shorter time of travel if thru private cars.

Coming from Manila, Gumaca is the 8th town of Quezon province passing along Tiaong, Candelaria, Sariaya, Lucena, Pagbilao, Atimonan, Plaridel then Gumaca. Two more towns on the south, Lopez and Calauag and you'll be right at Bicol proper, Camarines Norte.

Gumaca is situated along Lamon Bay which separates Alabat Group of Islands (Alabat, Perez and Quezon) from the mainland; right behind those islands is the biggest body of water, the Pacific Ocean.

I have already talked about Gumaca's historical landmarks here. This time, I want to introduce to you two of the most interesting restaurants in town: Bulwagang Salakot and Kapitbahay.

Bulwagang Salakot Restaurant

Bulwagang Salakot is located at Ave-Sol tourists complex in Brgy. Rosario, just along the highway and in front of Shell Station thus it's an easy find for commuters. It's an all in one accommodation as the complex housed a hotel, function hall for big events, restaurant and cafe, boutique and souvenir shops.

This restaurant offers wide array of items on their menu but what interests me the most is their specialty-- bibingkang galapong. I heard a lot about it but, okay...I haven't tried it yet! Odd 'cause walking distance lng sya from our house. So what a curious me should do? I tagged along my sister Yca and both we had our first bite of it right inside their Cafe Soledad.

Bibingkang Galapong for only P30

It was soft and creamy and goes well with coffee. I was actually expecting it to be a bit chewy but since it was just re-heated, it wasn't served as is. I just hope they serve brewed or sprecialty coffees other than instant. But bibingkang galapong definitely is a must-try and a great choice as pasalubong.

Kapitbahay Food Center

Kapitbahay reminds me of my grade and high school days where most of the memorable experiences of my life were held. My staple? Palabok and Mais Con Yelo. :)

Kapitbahay started as a small restaurant only near Gumaca Public Market and eventually it opened another chain called Kapitbahay Reception Hall, a two storey restaurant for big events and celebrations. Kapitbahay prides itself in making the best and most affordable pancit in town--bihon, canton, miki, sotanghon etc (affordable as an order for less than P100 could be shared already by 4-5 persons). Aside from pancit, it serves wide choices on their menu from pizza, burgers, fries, Pinoy viands, desserts and a lot more.

If you're to visit Quezon or Bicol, try to drop by Gumaca for a quick satisfying meal over at Bulwagang Salakot and Kapitbahay. Not only that they're amazingly named (like their names actually) but they serve amazing foods as well. Take it from a native Gumaquena! ^-^

Pepper Lunch is LOVE

We always love yakiniku-grill it yourself style of eating thus we were surprised (we went in not expecting for any) and delightful to discover an extraordinary yakiniku-sizzle-it-your-way Japanese restaurant located at Edsa Shangri-La lower ground--Pepper Lunch. It was indeed more than ‘pakonswelo’ as I called it after we failed to witness Twilight Saga-Eclipse despite scouting two malls that morning.

Apart from the usual charcoal grilled yakiniku, Pepper Lunch uses a unique electromagnetic cooker patented in Japan. It might sound just a typical sizzling plate though but this cooker heats up to 260 degree Celsius and could keep foods hot for long. What’s interesting with this was, foods were served fresh and raw (as in may dugo pa!) Kudos to the monitor mounted near the restaurant’s entrance showcasing ‘How to’s’ that we found ourselves in queue to order. Here it goes…

Gil had Cut Steak and Burger- P360 which I was actually eyeing. It comes with a variety of veggies and a separate bowl of pepper rice. It was served as this, before…

I, on the other hand gave in with the aroma of curry in the air thus I got mine Curry Beef Pepper Rice- P218. Beef was as fresh as this…

...And as juicy as this after few minutes…

We just add P68 each for a side dish of Side Salad and my fave miso soup and two glasses of sodas.

There were available special sauces on each table for additional flavor but we didn’t bother to use them as we found the foods soooper sarap na! The verdict: The steak was tender and flavorful but Gil and I agreed that the burger patty was the winner! It was the most unforgettable dish on his plate, something we will be looking forward to order again the next time! I also enjoyed my curry beef pepper rice…I love the mild kick of spiciness in it as I enjoy the aroma of curry while chewing each tender beef strips.

Another side of the story was that, we never knew Pepper Lunch actually and never read anything about it yet, not until I searched for some blogs about it. Then I realized, Pepper Lunch indeed is a hit since its original branch at Powerplant Mall was established, the fame Pepper Lunch truly deserves!

The farewell date turned out not the way we planned it to be, but lunchin’ over at Pepper Lunch saved our day! Gil and I highly recommend this place! :)

It’s been a while since I updated my blog. I just so miss writing but the moment I started typing, I was lost in words. Ganun cguro talaga pag hindi inspired! :)

Not until today that I finally (finally!) received my e-passport! Weeehh! I’m so excited! Yesterday was supposed to be the delivery date (together with Sir Jun’s- an officemate) but upon checking at LBC, wala pa raw sa kanila. Odd kz I have another officemate who renewed for passport that same day I applied (hapon sched nya and finished 9 in the evening) but his passport was delivered Aug.3, two days earlier than mine! The only difference was that he was assigned at 2GO while we had LBC. (I had my e-passport delivered Thursday, August 05).

Bottom line: Ask for 2GO or any other courier other than LBC if you have a timetable to meet.

I applied for an appointment at DFA website. First visit sometime in May, earliest available date was September. When I visited again last June, I was surprised to see July 22 as the earliest and so I, together with two girl colleagues, picked July30- in time for payroll. Few days after, I checked again and earliest date was moved to July20 and so I re-sched. That was morning so I was surprised to hear from Sir Jun and Jeff that they got an appointment on July 06 that afternoon. Needless to say, I had my final appointment on July 06 at 10am.

Bottom line: Be persistent. DFA available dates change from time to time.

One of the instructions was to show up at DFA New office along Macapagal Ave 30mins earlier than the scheduled time. I was there 9:30am with no foods and water on hand (and no breakfast yet). I thought I would finish the entire process in 3 hours max, pero nanigas na’t lahat binti ko kakatayo sa pila sa labas at nakatulog na ako’t lahat sa loob, di pa rin tinatawag number ko (which was what? Pang 4thou++ eh around 11am pa lng nun). Nung nanginginig na ako sa gutom (haha literal!), I decided to grab a snack at the nearby gasoline convenience store. I took my time pero nonsense, pagbalik ko mga 100 applicants pa before me. I was accommodated din nmn pero after payment sa cashier sa 2nd floor, I waited for hours again for photo capture. To sum it all up, it took me (and my officemates) SEVEN long hours for both New Application and Renewal as I finished at exactly 4:30pm. Nakakalungkot.

Bottom line: You can actually show up earlier than your scheduled time, I mean even earliest at 8am. They will just check if you have schedule for that day. My two girl friends were scheduled at 10am but they went there 8am and finished the entire process before lunch.

Have some baons with you as biscuits and drinks. Okay, foods are not allowed inside, but you could always steal a bite and gulp once in a while (pasaway) or just eat outside the hall.

Last (and optional) step was passport delivery. Just imagine my relief when everything was over, finally! I went to the back stairs and passed by this separate hall which was labeled Travel Agency. Then I realized, pwede pa palang magpa-process ng passport thru agency! Akala ko kz since appointment system na ang DFA, mas mabilis and efficient na yung proseso, no need for agency assistance na. But just the same, appointment itself lng ang pinagkaiba, same pa rin sa haba ang pila!

Bottom line: You may opt for travel agency assistance for 1-2hrs passport processing for additional fee to save you from queuing for hours (as in hours!)

Commuting all the way to DFA New office at Macapagal Ave is just an easy breezy bus ride from EDSA with DFA sign passing along SM Mall of Asia, or you may just ask the conductor if they will pass by DFA. (I came from Pasig and I really don’t know how to go there via commute, alone).

It still makes me smile pag naaalala ko macchiato thing na yun. I really don’t know how to pronounce the word, first time. Buti ba kung Cappuccino lang yun, lol! Anyway, it was our last coffee session together so after Tita Lally, Joy and us been to Chow for Gil’s Lauriat treat, I invited Gil out for a coffee chillax. And for a change, we tried Blenz-A Canadian Coffee Company located at Solaris One, Makati.

Macchiato, meaning something like “spotted” or “marked” in Italian, is an Espresso with a dash of foamed milk. Read it to be the most fattening coffee blend offered in most cafes.

I like their cheesecake (any cheesecake in particular hehe!) though we still prefer Bag of Bean’s version. We were disappointed on the other hand sa Apple Muffin, it was too sweet, coarsely made…nothing to rave about. Di pa ata namin naubos half. Gil’s hot café latte and my iced caramel macchiato were great, only too strong for my liking.

Then been busy camwhoring...

It’s really nice spending quality time together over coffee, no hustle and bustle of crowd…just great music, relax atmosphere and purely sweet talks. I just so miss hanging out with him but not as much as I DO miss him. Been two weeks…

Few days before Gil’s departure, we met up one of his best friends Engr. Romeo Camaya at SM Megamall for some casual despedida bonding. Unfortunately, Meo’s wife She was still at work then so she wasn’t able to join us. They were actually tres-inhinyeros-BES-friends-since-college together with Delio who’s now residing in Singapore with his family (I mean wife and kids—yah, si Gil nlng single).

As we’re craving for some Korean fix again, we also wanted to try new dish as Thai. We let Meo choose between the two and so we ended up at Jatujak Thai Restaurant located at UG/F of Mega A.

It’s our first serious Thai experience since I remember sampling an express bowl of Thai soup before. I relied mostly on my readings re Thai’s specialty thus I suggested Pad Thai, Crispy Catfish with Mango Salad, Tom Yum and Thai Iced Tea. Gil was impressed with the Fried Shrimp Cakes pics thus we had one plus Green Mango Shake. Meo wanted fish so he ordered Pla Pla with Chili Sauce and Thai Iced tea too for drinks. I suggested Bagoong rice din pala but since ayaw ni Gil ng bagoong, we had Fried Rice with Crab Meat instead.

So let the Thai feast begin!

Chicken Pad Thai (Pad See Lew)- P175

Considered as Thailand’s most famous noodle dish. Taste was sweet, nutty and filling.

Tom Yum All-Shrimps (Tom Yum Goong) M- P195

I like the presentation of the pot tapos may apoy sa ilalim to preserve the warmth of the soup. It was sour (and a bit sweet) with strong herb taste of Chinese parsley aka cilantro. Shrimps were fresh though.

Crispy Catfish w/ Mango Salad (Yam Pla Duk Foo)- P195

The picture shows the crispy shredded Catfish (or hito). Green Mango Strips were hidden at the bottom. True enough, the combination was brilliant!

Fried Shrimp Cake (Tod Mun Goong)- P250

One of the few items in our table we could say masarap! The shrimp croquettes were succulent and filling we’re curious how many shrimps they peeled for each order of this.

Pla Pla with Garlic Chili Sauce (Pla Rad Prik)- P280

Fried fish meat served atop the fish bone, galing! (Yep, mukha lang buo pa yung fish pero tinik nlng sya actually).

Garlic Chili sauce plus a collection of sili condiments for additional ‘anghang’ kick were served separately.

Fried Rice with Crabmeat (Kao Pad Poo)- P175

We barely tasted crabmeat actually. Sana they put on more visible strips of crabmeat. Good thing the servings were sumptuous it actually satisfied the three of us.

Surprised to see a gigantic glass of iced tea! Parang flower vase lang! Lol!

(Was able to take few sips lang, di ko tlga gusto milk tea. I traded mine to Gil’s Green Mango shake, eyun nainis…di rin nya gusto milk tea eh! :)

Btw, we borrowed Nay’s digicam since my sister Yca borrowed mine. Few minutes lang sya nacharge, good thing we’re able to take group pics before the battery runs out…

I envy those people who appreciate and enjoy Thai cuisines. Odd kz I love hot & spicy and sour foods at the same time. I’m a noodle fan too and a person of soup but the strong taste of CILANTRO in each Thai meal spoils my foodie side. Later on, I learned that Gil and Meo shared the same sentiments, the reason of the leftover foods we decided to take home after (na di rin nagalaw sa bahay). They even exclaimed sana sa Dencio’s nlng daw kmi hehe! Fair enough to give Thai foods a try but dunno if we’ll ever try Thai again…really! :)

Been hooked with Twilight Saga the first time we saw it on DVD. I still remember how Sheng (Gil’s sister) and I giggled on most part of Edward and Bella’s scenes while Gil was in deep slumber, his head in my lap. The soothing conversations, the thrill of Bella mingling around vampire clan, the protective yet sweet attitude of Edward, the vulnerability of Bella, everything on that fiction story brought up the teenage years in me. I still remember how Sheng and I exclaimed “Haayyy…” after every kilig phrases from Edward himself. Lol!

So what a bitin fanatic me should do? I bought the first three books (though I already have e-books in pdf files sa office) so I could digest the story inch by inch. Due to curiosity na rin cguro, Gil borrowed the books then and read some parts khit sabi nya corny daw! Anyway, Twilight Saga: New Moon was our first movie when he arrived from Japan last Dec. Super pila pa kami sa Market! Market! eh weeks ago na nakalipas nung magshowing sya. Great movie nmn tlga, but still…bitin!

Unfortunately, due to some katamaran and all, I’m on my 3rd book pa lang. I still hope to finish reading it before June 30, in time for the movie itself. It will be our last date narin, literal last day na mkakasama ko sya so we wanted to make the most of it! Ayan na naman ang goodbyes…. hate it really! :(

…and so I’m back to my old bookworm form again.

Update as of 7/03/10

We went off Wednesday morning, June 30, around 10am to Trinoma to watch Twilight Saga: Eclipse but to our dismay, soooper daming tao sa Cinema, as in supposedly aircon sya pero super init tlga! Buti libre ride sa LRT/MRT, we went back to crossing and ended up sa Edsa Shangrila (for sure kz marami na rin tao sa Megamall). Haba narin ng pila sa Shang pero tolerable nmn so umabot pa kami sa ticket counter only to find out pang 7pm nlng ang available, few seats for disabled sa pinakaunahan, the fact na around 11am pa lng that time. We decided not to since early morning the following day na flight ni Gil eh di pa sya nkagayak. Plan A failed (of watching Eclipse) but the rest of that day turned out just right. Had great lunch over at Pepper Lunch which I'll surely share with you in my future posts. Stay tuned! :)

Missing Baguio

Our scheduled Baguio visit this year will not push through anymore for Gil’s not comfortable commuting. Been planning already of it since I learned of Camp John Hay’s Camp Manor’s Irresistible Baguio promo of almost half the price OFF. Can’t blame Gil though for we’ve been obviously experiencing catastrophes from different sides of the world, and commuting all the way to Baguio wasn’t a great idea (Sour graping). Lol!

I just remember exactly how it feels traveling with Gil alone for the first time, 3D2N. How we struggled to get the ‘chance passengers’ tickets at Victory Liner station in Cubao at 1am and reached Baguio city proper just after the sun showed up. Gil was so excited visiting Baguio for the first time so as soon as we get off the bus, we asked for a cab to take us to Philippine Military Academy.

...then take advantage of the cool breeze along SM City Baguio’s veranda…

...before we looked for a hotel to stay. It was a long weekend and lucky us to get a room at Golden Pine Hotel even without reservations.

After a decent dinner at Andoks, we savored the cool breeze at Rizal Park and stroll around the city proper later on till our legs cramped up…

...good thing our room has bath tub we’re able to have hot bath that night and the night after that.

I remember so well how excited we were the next day for we’re to go strawberry farming at La Trinidad’s Strawberry farm.

..but it was too hot (we actually had sunburn) we decided to visit our next stop, the Bell Church.

...had some photo ops at Baguio City Hall, lunch at KFC Session Road then visited Baguio Market for some fresh fruits after.

We enjoyed the first half of that day but got to enjoy more the rest of the day as we continue our tour and proceed at The Mansion…

...and experienced being lost at Camp John Hay…

Good thing we still able to attend the Palm Sunday mass that night.

Dinner was a take home feast of pizza and lauriats.

The next (and last) day, we found ourselves at Mines View Park first thing in the morning…

...and head to Botanical Garden after that.

Burham Park was intentionally put at the last part of our list since it’s located in the heart of Baguio proper…

...and since Orchidarium is within Burnham Park’s premise, we paid off a visit as well…

...before heading back again to Baguio Market for some goodies as fresh strawberries, jams and Lengua de Gato as pasalubong.

It was our first ever do-it-yourself getaway and though we really did enjoy the trip, we admit that it was one heck of a tiring experience jumping from one point to another. And so we thought of going back to Baguio the 2nd time around…to just savor the cool June breeze, to get lost again at Camp John Hay’s ground hand-in-hand, to run around CJH eco trail, to sip the best coffee while chillaxing, to feel his arms around me while walking and talking about anything possible, be it nonsense or otherwise…to just steal some quality time together…

We could still visit Baguio anytime of course, but…okay, not now…not in the next five months…

...for I only have seven days left remaining before he fly back to Japan. *Sigh.

Savoring Classic Savory

Had tasted another blogworthy Pinoy deli at Classic Savory last Friday courtesy of Sheng (Gil's sisterette) after we accompanied her to buy WOW Premium Magic Sing (original price less 2k worth of discount provided sa SM daw binili) which we enjoyed till the wee hours as we sing our hearts out. :)

Classic Savory is another reason to visit SM Megamall located at the lower ground floor, near the previously Bowling area (CS is side-by-side with another NEW resto in the mall, the A Veneto--which we sampled ages ago.lol! See link here).

We were there around 8pm and surprised to see the the resto jampacked, as in muntik nang sa table sa labas kmi pumwesto. The moment we were seated, they set our table and gave us the menu (baka magbago pa isip nmin? lol)

We had a single order too of Sweet and Sour pork for P195 since sample size lng ung sa combo. Did I mention Sweet and Sour pork (fish or anything with sweet and sour sauce) is my personal fave? Yep, and this is one of the best I've tasted for it's crunchy on the outside but tender inside. Samahan pa ng generous chunks of pineapple, bell pepper at onions, crunchy saraapp! :)

Status: ENGAGED

Gil and I were using ‘Engage’ status on FB ever since we joined the social network group and just recently (Friday night), I changed my profile and included his name (automatically linking it to his FB acct) saying “Engaged to Gilbert (Surname).”

The following night, I was surprised to see long piles of notifications referring to that “changed status.” Comments flooded my previously unnoticed account since I mostly just play Tiki Resort and Restaurant City than chat around friends. For the record, we’re not really active members and hardly update the accounts, posting only few pics to share. It’s just so surprising to read comments as “Congrats”, “Congratulations” “I’m happy for you” among sooo many greetings wishing us well as ‘newly’ engaged couple from close friends, not-so-close friends and from mga simpleng kabatian lang. Those who LIKED the issue were another story. Saya saya! :)

To quote my reply:

“Hala! Anong nangyayari d2? Haha! It’s still unofficial though…wala pang singsing (parinig!) Hehe! But this is for good na. And as I found my ‘the one’, I wish the same thing to everyone. Just believe in God’s plan and God’s perfect timing. Cheers to us! :)”

Why am I writing this anyway? Because Gil just learned that we’re ‘officially’ engaged the following night when he saw the comments from his friends on his own FB account. Haha! We burst out in laughter as I kept on saying, “What have I done?” Haha! :)

But seriously speaking, we couldn’t find the right term between ‘In-a-relationship’ and ‘Married’ other than ‘Engaged’. ‘In a relationship’ is an understatement since we’re not anymore on the pa-tweetums stage of the relationship. We could read each other’s mood in a single glimpse, we compliment each other for so many reasons and for 2.5 years of being together (we go to the same office, we live in the same village as in 5mins walk lng cguro), we knew each other too well and accepted not just the good side but each flaws as well. More importantly, we knew we’re heading to a more serious stage in the next months to come. :)

Now my problem is that, how can I broadcast to all that I’m “officially” engaged comes the engagement ring? Or even without the ring (I don’t even consider e-ring important), how could I shout out to the world that he finally (and officially) asked me to marry him and be with him for the rest of his life?

I was just so naïve to know (and remember) that every single action you made on your fb account will be visible to all your friends (and everyone in fb in particular if you didn’t apply some privacy settings). See? I’m yet to discover more bout it. Haha! :)

It was a lazy Friday afternoon just after office when I thought of inviting Gil out to a different dining experience, Korean setting this time. I learned of this place from our previous GM, Murase San and wife Yoko (Japanese) who constantly tag us (Che, Joy and I- who he called his angels) in their dinner dates and been yearning to let Gil experience the same since then. The place is called Min Sok Restaurant, a known Korean restaurant within Korean town in Poblacion, Makati.

Min Sok is a house turned restaurant owned and operated by couple OG IN, HAM (I assumed though as written sa calling card). It doesn’t have the ‘homey’ vibe I’m looking for in every resto we visit but has that ‘mind your own business’ feel, as we never felt awkward mingling around mostly Korean customers. Both the owners and staffs were accommodating. At one point, we saw the Korean owner assisting the customers to slather lard unto the pre-hot grilling plate.

Going on, we ordered the main reason of our visit: the Sam Gyupsal described as three (sam) layered (gyeop) pork meat (sal) thinly sliced for grilling (tama ba ate Pheng? Hehe!) An order consists of 10 pieces pre-cut meat, lettuce for wrapping and a dozen or so condiments, which occupied most of the space in our table.

To begin with, Ate assisted us with the heating of the grilling plate and did the first batch of grilling.

Two orders of Sam Gyupsal entitle you to a FREE steaming bowl of Miso soup…er, SPICY Miso soup. Spicyness is tolerable btw. Laveet! :)

We also had Haemul jun- a Seafood Korean Pancake, which is equally satisfying! We thought of it as pizza before but it actually looked and tasted like omelet with lots of vegetables and seafood served with Korean dip (soy sauce with chili something!)

They don’t scrimp with the lettuce and condiments as they add with or without requests. Owners and staffs roam each table from time to time checking what to be replaced. Sweet noh? :)

If you were up to a Korean fix, non-aircon and basic environment but definitely good food…. Min Sok is the right place to be! Really a value for your money Korean experience!

Will definitely visit again and again...and again! :)

Birthday Pig-Out

I’ve been meaning to blog on RIO’s birthday feast at North Park but couldn’t find time since the audit season started. Whoa!

It was the same Barrio Fiesta and Mom & Tina’s Bakery Café team (less Sir Jek who is in a loooong vacation, 6weeks perhaps!). Cherry suggested the place as usual and though it’s only a few walks away from office, ngayon lng nmin sya natry hehe!

As per RIO’s instructions, SKY IS THE LIMIT! And so Cherry and I feasted on the menu, pinpoint every dish palatable to the eyes and sounds interestingly mouth-watering. Haha! Nagulat pa kmi when the foods arrived at wala ng mpaglagyan sa table nmin sa dami. We were only five, just imagine how we able to munch down the foods. Pig out! :D

Cherry first opted for North Park Chow Mien (Pancit Guisado/ Chami)- P238 and Boneless Fried Chicken Chops-P195.

A closer look:

North Park Chow Mien was served in a really huge ‘bandehado’. What I love about this is the generous amount of mushrooms on it. Taste was Ok- for me, a combination of Pancit Canton and Pancit Lucban, a well-known pancit in Quezon.

Boneless Fried Chicken Chops is the group’s favorite. It was tender and tasty and before we knew it, ubos na sya. Sarap papakin! :)

I was supposed to choose my comfort food-Noodle soup- but I opted for Hot Pot dish as this could be shared. We had Nanking Beef & Tendon w/ Raddish instead- P218.

We couldn’t distinguish kung asan na ang Hot Pot Nanking Beef na ‘to sa mesa coz we’re expecting for a steaming bowl of Beef and tendon soup. It was saucy pala and looked and tasted like…ahm, humba? Later we realized, it was served in a pot nga naman…thus the name. :)

Head-off Prawns w/ Sweet Chili Sauce is my personal choice too as I learned of this being one of their bestsellers and amongst North Park’s signature dishes. Another favorite of Gil and the group that night, sweet and tasty! Sarap! :)

Then the boys insisted, ‘bakit walang rice?’ And so, we had North Park Special Fried Rice w/ Sauce-P198 and Pineapple Fried Rice w/ Pork Sausage-P168.

Our first time to experience a saucy fried rice.The fried rice itself was good enough for sharing and what surprised me though is that, the sauce was meaty as it has fish chunks, generous servings of mushrooms and prawns…in short, good as ulam na sya! It was served separately in a pot too, dami ng serving! :)

We’ll have this fried rice w/ sauce set next time tapos hingi nlng kmi ng tubig, sulit! Hehe! :)

And since we ordered rice (without any idea of the sauce ulam that comes with it), Cherry (and I?) exclaimed ‘wala pa tayong ulam!’ (As if di pa considered ulam ang ibang orders nmin haha!) And so we ordered Roast Combination Platter. Marcus favored Shanghai Spring Rolls under Dimsum as an additional.

I don’t remember the last time I pig out like this haha! I couldn’t distinguish which is which actually kz halo halo na. Buti nlng we preferred Lemon Iced tea (a MUST- as stated on the menu) to wash up unwanted cholesterol build-up. After two hours++ of pigging out, we went home bloated (I mean it!) and sleepyheads! May take home pa kami ni Cherry (yey!)

Laiya Weekend Summer Escape

We won't have company outing (again) this year! Sigh. Good thing electrical group thought of organizing a weekend overnight escape to at least cool down the scorching summer heat. Initial plan of Puerto Galera failed, then Zambales and finally the plan ended up at Laiya Batangas. And since it's on a budget and is more favorable for Gil who doesn't like the idea of sea transfer, go na rin kami. Yey!

We were ten in group divided into two cars courtesy of Che and Zarah. Our group (Zarah, Dan, Mon, Gil and I) met up at the office in Makati while Che, RJ, Mark, Ipe and Aldrin stayed overnight at Che's place in Cavite. We're on our way by 7am and convoy comes Slex. Mejo nadelay lng ng mahuli kami along Pasong Tamo. Violation:One-way. Result: P500 breakfast treat for Manong enforcer.

Laiya is everyone's first time thus it took us hours of travel. Had stopover at San Juan Market nga pala to buy foods as baon for our entire stay and to have lunch na rin. By around 2pm, we've reached Laiya and the fun started the moment we entered Sigayan Bay Resort.

Sigayan Bay Resort is just a small resort of only 1,900sq.m lot as in we were confused of the sign Punto Miguel along the way from our cottage to the beach, only to find out sa kabilang resort na pala un. Then we learned, dikit-dikit pala resorts sa part na yun ng Laiya. :)

Mark, Che and Zarah did the cottage reservations (and most of the planning- sabit lng kmi ni Gil) We had Halaan II cottage for an overnight stay at P5,800. It has two airconditioned bedrooms and separate CR located at the end of the aisle.

The little veranda with the bamboo table and chairs, ref, hot and cold water dispenser plus 5gal mineral water, gas and stove. And since we brought in foods, we paid P500 corkage fee.

As soon as we settled, the group tried the white sand Laiya is well known for. Kami? We took a nap since we're too damn tired :)

Snorkeling at past 5pm (Imagine us na pupungas pungas pa from a deep slumber tapos biglang snorkeling daw. Huh!) Gil was obviously hesitant and nervous, he's beginning to learn swimming pa lng kz haha! :) Pero since 10pax minimum, wala na syang nagawa pa. :) Fee is P70/pax.

We could say that this part was the highlight of this trip since we're able to enjoy the 10ft (Read: 10feet) sea water for swimmers and non-swimmers alike. Nagpakain nga pala kmi isda with our baon Lemon Square loaf pero kami pa rin nakinabang in the end dahil sa pagod. lol!

He managed to face his fears after learning na hindi pala sya nag-iisa, that there were Dan and Che to mingle with. Dito lng sila sa area na 'to the whole time, taking one swim at a time. :)

It's dark already when we decided to finally leave the sea. We actually missed Nemo and his friends since we decline to rent the snorkeling gadgets (P100/pax) other than the goggles, everybody was no doubt enjoyed this part, right zeb? :)

The night was spent for dinner, videoke and the usual drinking session of the boys (except Gil). We went to bed earlier than them as they're obviously enjoying the company of some new found (girl) friends. Thus we were not surprised anymore the following day seeing no one within the area, as in tulog pa lahat! :) As the usual routine kz, we hope to catch the sunrise drama (as well as the sunset) but we're surprised to see a lot of people (as in exagge sa dami) na nasa dagat na as early as 6am. And as expected, we failed to capture the best scene but did take some photos na rin to share.

We were actually expecting much about Laiya white sand beaches (thought of it as that of Bohol). I saw and read for myself blogs re Laiya resorts and how beautiful the place is. The sand wasn't white anymore, and madumi ang tubig. There were too many guests you will accidentally bump while swimming. But in fairness, it has a wide stretch of shorelines and hindi nmn sya masakit sa paa. Sigayan Bay offers one of the cheapest resort accommodation din which is really a great deal for families and friends' overnight escapades.

Had breakfast first before we went to the beach for our last dip, then lunch. Check-out at exactly 1pm and off we went for another hot road trip back home. Had fun though!

Before the last Sakura petal falls…

...Gil used to experience Sakura season during his previous Japan assignments and just before the last cherry blossom petal falls, he wanted to share some of his precious photographs along with this article which he written himself as he reminisce the experience beneath the Sakura.

Two years had passed since I last saw the astounding beauty of cherry blossom also known as “Sakura” in Owariasahi City, Aichi, Japan. And it still brings back the wonderful memory.

Strange, I only have two pictures of Cherry Blossom way back year 2004. Maybe I was still in awe during my early stay in Japan that I forgot to bring home with me some nice pictures. (The other pictures posted here were taken in year 2008)

Depending on the climate and location, the flowers of Sakura bloom as early as January on the southern part of Japan while on the northern part it bloom as late as May. Along the riverbank in Ibaraki Prefecture (a 2-hours bus ride from Tokyo) where I work, the Cherry Blossom starts to bloom mid-March.

The short life cycle of Sakura flowers has been associated with nature of life. It takes about a week for all the flowers to its full bloom and another week until all the petals fall to ground. Strong wind and rain may even shorten this period. For this reason, Japanese and tourists pay attention to when is the best possible viewing days.

Underneath the Tree...

It is customary for the Japanese to hold a flower-viewing party under the Cherry Blossom. The comfortable ambience and the unique contrast of colors (pale pink flowers and brown branches) of this tree not only provide shelter to its guests but also relaxation and enjoyment.

I am not familiar with the varieties of Cherry Blossom as they all look the same to me. Others maybe taller and wider, but once I am underneath and watching the petals as they fall to the ground or touch my skin, the feeling is really indescribable.

The start of Sakura signifies the end of winter and the start of spring. Just before the spring ends signals my arrival to Japan from last year onwards since I requested the change of schedule from March-July to July-November so I may spend time with Michelle on her birthday, a more important event of course than my favorite Sakura season.

Batis Aramin Sightseeing

After a notable and breathtaking (literal) trek at Kamay ni Hesus, isn’t it fair to reward yourself a cold dip and relax over a nature themed place as Batis Aramin? That’s maybe the reason why this resort was created located just across the street, few blocks away from Kamay ni Hesus compound, Lucban Quezon.

We were able to catch up the day tour rate of Pph100/pax though it was already past 6pm. We won’t stay long anyway since we still need to travel back to Lucena and catch up a bus ride to Gumaca for 1.5hours.

This sign is situated along the highway but you still need to walk down the vacant lot area to reach the gate. Approaching the gate, you will notice another Aramin hotel still under constructions.

As we enter, we were awed with the man-made lagoon used for kayak activities…

Heading straight is this pool area with man-made falls and ‘baging’ for playful kiddies. Imagine playing ‘Tarzan’ habang nkasabit ka sa baging tapos sa tubig ang bagsak mo. Hehe! ;)

Up in the hill is this building/ hotel for guests’ overnight accommodations. (We didn’t bother to scan though coz getting dark na). I think there are more accommodations hidden in this area, not just this building (read signage).

We strolled again around lagoon area and discovered the more private and bermuda covered lawn behind it. There’s a single house at the far end corner but we don’t know if it’s for rent. Mini houses along lagoon area were obviously for rent.

A five-hour travel from Manila to Lucban, and a leg-breaking trek up Kamay ni Hesus…don’t you wish to just sit and relax and savor the beauty of the nature around you?

It’s dark already when we finally decided to leave and head home to Gumaca where we’ll to have family beach bonding the following day! ;)

Saying I had a blast is an understatement. With lunch over at Kamayan sa Palaisdaan, a blessed visit at Kamay ni Hesus and an hour stay at Batis Aramin with no one else but Gil, couldn't think of any other ways to celebrate birthday as meaningful as this! ;)

The Trek Up Kamay ni Hesus

After a satisfying lunch and rest at Kamayan sa Palaisdaan, we took a jeep ride going to Kamay ni Hesus Shrine in Lucban Quezon. It is a healing center located at the foot of Mt. Banahaw, a compound with the statue of Jesus Christ situated on the topmost part of the hill, and the church at the foot of the slope where the healing masses officiated by Fr. Joey Faller were celebrated every Wednesday and Saturday, 9:30-12noon. (See more of the mass schedules here).

I first visited the church and vow some personal wishes and gratitude for another year He has given me. Thankful for I’m not anymore confused asking the usual ‘Where am I heading at in this life’s journey?’ I’m excited actually of what lies ahead of me…for I believe in His plans and that He has something in store for me in the future.

We’re to look for the Garden of Eden gate since the front gate beside the church was closed when Gil noticed these prayers, dedications and footprints written and marked on the church’s façade.

Kamay ni Hesus is an ideal destination during Holy Week Pilgrims where life size images of saints were displayed depicting the Station of the Cross.

We first stopped at one corner to light color-coded candles according to intentions (5 different colored candles at P20/pack).

Okay, seems I’m ready to climb up! The guard on duty instructed us not to spend too long upstairs since the gate will be closed at 5:30pm (It’s around 5pm then). No worries, coz it’ll be a swift climb for me (I thought so). Gil was, well, will just wait for me downstairs…church’s side. ;)

I actually didn’t start from point 1 to 2 and so forth. My goal was to reach the top and experience the feeling of being closer to heaven thus I just shoot some stations I passed by.

It actually took me some stops to catch my breath. Lol! This trek was really tiring and leg breaking. I don’t even have bottled drinks or hanky with me. I should have known….Haha!

Finally…whoah!

The view from the top was foggy and breathtaking! Trees were surrounding the area with benches underneath…a simple way of nature as if saying ‘Come and rest for a while. I know you’re tired. I prepared this shade for you.” I stayed for a while to recharge and savor the experience. If only Gil knew what he’s missing. Hehe! ;)

Don’t ever think that the trek going down will be as easy as I thought. It’s not! Stairs were steep and of large intervals.

And Gil? There he was…waiting. ;)

Glad to have visited Kamay ni Hesus for the first time. It’s my day today…and I really feel blessed.

The idea of spending my entire birthday with Gil was my personal decision but I never knew it would really be ‘me and Gil’ alone! *Wink* I forgot my phone at the office Wednesday (we’re on leave Thurs, Fri is holiday then the weekend) so it’s gonna be a birthday without greetings from friends and everyone else. Gil had his phone with him all right, pero nasa bus pa lng kmi eh low bat na. Haha! ;)

The planned 4am departure turns 8am (fb games addict). We arrived at Lucena Grand Central at 12:30pm where jeepneys are on queue bound to different destinations in Quezon and hopped in with the Lucban sign going to our first destination: Kamayan sa Palaisdaan.

Kamayan sa Palaisdaan is located in Brgy. Dapdap Tayabas, Quezon (but was actually along the highway going to Lucban). We were dropped at the new restaurant (the original Kamayan is just across the street) where we were introduced (again) to the traditional way of eating: with bare hands instead of using condiments.

Kamayan also offers a different dining setting, as bamboo cottages float atop the fishpond.

There were also a group of singers to serenade you as you were enjoying the freshest catch of the day! ;)

Just imagine our ‘gutom’ after the 4hours straight travel! After we settled with the first available cottage we saw, we waited for the wait staff to take our orders, but it took us a loooooottt before being served (kung di pa kmi tumawag ng nagseserve sa kbilang cottage). We were given the menu, placed our orders and upon seeing the more private cottage being emptied, we transferred. Good thing I was able to take pictures after placing our orders and when I’m almost done scanning the place, the foods arrived-yey! ;)

We were delighted when the wait staff finally served our orders:

(TIP: Place an order right away as soon as you settled in one of their cottage before taking pics for it might take a lifetime! Reasonable enough, the foods were freshly caught and cooked as to order. Di pwedeng gutom na gutom ka!)

Sinigang na Sugpo was served in a ‘palayok’ where shrimps and vegetables were no doubt fresh. I was more on the sour side when it comes to sinigang, and this one is just fine- missing a little bit of sourness. I love the inihaw na bangus with grated spices though we were surprised to see it ‘daing’ like (we were thinking of grilled bangus stuffed with spices). Calamares was crunchy and chewy at the same time, perfect!

Kamayan sa Palaisdaan might have flaws and cons when it comes to service but we couldn’t deny the fact that it was indeed one of the best and the freshest lunch we’ve had! (With me ‘nkakamay’ and Gil with his spoon and fork. Hehe!)

Good morning Thursday! ;)

It's gonna be another long weekend for Gil and I (we're on leave today woohooo!). As of this moment, we might be on our way home already to Quezon to spend this very especial day and the rest of the weekend with my family in Gumaca. But contrary to the usual 6hours straight travel from Manila to Quezon province via commute, we will drop by Lucena and head to some of the must-visit spots of the nearby towns and spend the rest of the day together. And since it'll only take us an hour and a half travel from Lucena to Gumaca, we'll definitely reach home earlier tonight. The rest of the weekend will be spent with my family as we're planning to have the usual beach bonding. Will surely make 'kwentos' when I came back! (Excited mode!)

Slurp-y Ramen experience at Shinjuku

(...a week overdue article!)

It was a weeklong craving for Japanese ramen for me (blame it to Sir Jhune, Ate Ana and Kuya Jon) imagining the huge bowl Kuya Jon grossly described as “Isang arenolang ramen!” Lol! So comes Friday and we’re off to Shinjuku Japanese Cuisine (Shinjuku Ramen House) for a wonderful ramen experience! ;)

It was initially a ramen date for me and Gil but since it was Tita Lally’s birthday (our officekeeper and a nanay to Gil), we invited her over to join us. Liman and Joy tagged along (Liman asked Tita to dine out but since we’re to try Shinjuku after office, we decided to go nlng as group).

As we’re waiting for the foods to come, I took some pics of the place. Glad to come earlier for I heard of this place being jam packed during lunch and dinner.

Of the two ramen, Manten Men was the more outstanding for us girls (though the taste was somewhat similar to that of Chowking Crispy Noodles, only a little saucy—try it!) Gil and Liman on the other hand preferred Karakuchi Negi (they’ve been to Japan several times already thus they’re more accustomed to authentic Japanese ramen). Gyosa was no doubt one of their bestsellers while mixed tempura offers crispy tempura variations of which I loved mushroom tempura the most.

We were too stuffed it took us some time to finish the meals! ;) Overall, it was a delicious slurp-y experience for us! They have many kinds of ramen to choose from anyway, thus I’m dying to try out some more on our next visit. Can’t wait! ;)

Mom & Tina’s Bakery Cafe Treat

True to Gil’s promise to treat the group out on our next lakad, we went over at Mom & Tina’s Bakery Cafe located at Perea St. corner Dela Rosa St, Makati Monday night, just after office. It was Cherry who insisted the place though I was actually curious about it after reading Dencio’s entry on his blog.

We invited others to join us but at the end, Barrio Fiesta group din pala ang matutuloy hehe! ;) And since super traffic nun, we decided to walk our way down Perea St. coming from Rufino (Haha! Mejo malayo pa pala, just imagine the reactions of the boys! Lol!)

The cafe was as homey as this:

The place was cozy and really had that homey vibe. They have different dining sets as some are with couches, others were of wooden chairs with foams while the rest were just plain wooden sets. We settled for the latter located at the far end corner.

Drinks were notable too as their Green Iced Tea (Php60) is literally green while their Blue Lemonade (Php60) is well, blue! ;) No green mango shake available thus I had ripe mango smoothie (Php90) instead.

My lasagna was creamy and meaty. I let Cherry and Gil tried it and they all agreed it was tastier than their Carbonara, which was ok but something I still won’t order the next time.

Marcus on the other hand was disappointed seeing only few bits of seafood on his pasta. Taste was ok but nothing to rave about as well.

Richard’s pasta’s name was promising! ;) Seems like Richard was satisfied with it anyway.

Then comes the most awaited part of the meal, the dessert! ;) What we sampled were:

Brazo de Mercedez-Php35/slice

Chocolate Fudge Cupcake-Php35/pc

The Blueberry Cheesecake was a delight! It just literally melts in your mouth-Yum! Downside was the brown core, which was crunchy and hard. Marcus bakes his own version of Blueberry Cheesecake better than this one (but Bag of Beans’ Blueberry Cheesecake still ranks first in our list!) *Grin*

Mom & Tina is truly a dessert lovers’ haven! Though the pasta was not as spectacular as we expected them to be, we’ll surely come back for more… cakes and pastries speaking! ;)

…Now I’m thinking of a walnut pie …and their famous Oreo Cheesecake! *Drool*

Burritos

Army Navy opened up few weeks ago along Dela Rosa St, Makati and since I’m a big fan of pita bread (and dips and fillings) and thought of it as that of Café Mediterranean, I was really excited to try out their burritos (Not knowing that the wrapper itself was not actually made up of pita bread but soft tortilla).

Looking for some place to dine out to after a tiring Saturday OT, we were led to Army Navy for this was the only store opened late that night within the area (except of course 7-11).

1st impression: The store looks like a military bunker giving a masculine feel to it.

As to menu, we sampled:

Cheese Quesadilla-Php85 -Nothing to rave about though. Even the salsa and the garlic/hot sauce didn’t help.

Steak Burrito-Php155 -We were surprise to learn that they serve burritos in huge sizes, as in ang hirap ngumanga at kainin as is! I’m about to ask for a fork and knife but looking around, I saw these signs:

1st sign from left: NO FORKS NEEDED, EAT WITH YOUR HANDS (Ok fine!)

Burritos were basically made up of meat, spanish rice, beans, onions, lettuce and cilantro wrapped in a flour tortilla.

We could have enjoyed our meal if not with the strong taste of cilantro (bakit kz may ganun pa?) Then I understand the purpose of the slice of lemon, may aftertaste at ‘umay’ factor kz sya (The whole night till the following day parang nalalasahan pa rin nmin sya. Hehe!) Anyway, it’s fun eating burritos, ang messy nmin! Laglagan ang mga fillings everytime kakagat kmi haha! ;)

Thanks to this LiberTEA-Php55, at least we tasted something soothing and refreshing. No doubt it’s brewed iced tea.

We’ll still come back though, maybe their burgers are better…

Bohol Beach Club Day Tour

Finally, we’re able to see and experience the beauty of Bohol Beach Club on Day 2 of our stay in Bohol (we couldn’t miss the chance!). Since we couldn’t afford to stay here overnight (rates are quoted in US dollar, $77 the least for single occupancy and $82 for twin sharing), we settled for day tour na lang at P350/head, of which P250 is consumable for food and drinks (that’s Fri-Sat-Sun rate while Mon to Thurs’ rate is at P250/pax, of which P150 is consumable for food).

Bohol Bee Farm nga pala offers free shuttle service to/from airport and BBF but since we already scheduled our countryside tour upon arrival and that Kuya Rejjy will be the one to drop us to Bee Farm, we asked for the FREE transport service to Bohol Beach Club and back to Bee Farm instead, of which Ms. Vicky- the owner of Bee Farm eagerly agreed! ;-)

We’ve reached Bohol Beach Club before 2pm (only a 10-minute travel from BBF) and we’re truly awed the moment we set our foot on the place. Who wouldn’t?

BBC has the longest stretch of white sand in Panglao. It’s another beautiful place Bohol should be proud of!

They also have this mini ‘mahogany man-made forest’ which we enjoyed taking pics since we got blurred pics sa real one during the countryside tour. =)

BBC accdg to readings has three swimming pools but we only got to see two (where’s the other one ba?)

The sun actually never shows up during our BBC stay (mejo umambon pa nga) but glad to still catch the last minute drama of the lovely sunset.

It was dark already when we decided to leave the beach. There were already buffet dinner set-up along the shore, loud music and guests (mostly foreigners) were already having a great time dancing and partying.

Buffet dinner was at P650/pax. Mejo pricey kya we settled for their ala Carte instead.

Btw, the P350/pax entrance is good already for buffet lunch (bakit kaya mas mahal ang buffet dinner?) But since we’re more of sunset people, we preferred having candlelit dinner nlng instead (around 8pm na rin kmi nagpasundo).

We went over at Agotata Restaurant (beside the large pool) and feasted on seafoods. Yumyum!

Btw, we met again Ms. Petra in this restaurant who was also visiting for a day tour. She’s to go back to Holland the following day. It was nice learning some people visiting Philippines alone for leisure. She surely had a great time! ;)

It was such an experience visiting Bohol Beach Club. The views, the fine powdery sand, the well manicured landscape, the hammocks, the nipa huts along the shore, the clear water, the pool, and the foods amongst others were wonderful and breathtaking. True to their slogan…Stay at the BEST, stay at Bohol Beach Club (we never stay though but at least we see for ourselves another world class resort Bohol and Philippines should be proud of!)

Bohol Bee Farm: Fares and Accommodation

We’re supposed to stay at Dumaluan Beach Resort, 1st to take advantage of their cheap rates, 2nd we wanted a more serene, less crowded environment (based on research kz, Panglao Island was divided into Alona and Dumaluan areas, the former being the more commercialized and the latter being the less crowded) and lastly, so we could enjoy the nearby high-end Bohol Beach Club as they share the same shoreline. But since I became too busy planning with our Moon Garden and Anniv Escapes, fully booked na DBR when we inquired. (nawindang talaga ako nung malaman kong fully booked na sya, ever sa hanap ulit ako ng possible resort to stay na pasok sa budget namin- ok, budget ni Gil hehe!)

Then I remembered Bohol Bee Farm. I haven’t read any negative feedbacks about this place pero hesitant ako at first kz I was thinking of something FARM (baka sobrang liblib na yung area, etc). Nevertheless, nag-book na rin ako online at tsaka nlng ako nagsearch ng blogs re BBF (baka maubusan na nmn kmi ng slot). I chose The BARN room @ 2k/night w/ breakfast for two (not bad!) Reading BBF entries of Chyng and Pusang Kalye made me realized; I have indeed made the right choice! ;-)

We were booked at The BARN room but surprisingly; we were upgraded to Beehive Suite (at Barn rate). What a warm welcome! ;-)

The CR was lovely too (though walang tabo).

We’ve reached Bee Farm after our countryside tour at around 3pm thus we rested for a while before we finally able to check the place and have dinner. Glad to still catch the lovely sunset as we discovered their view deck on the cliff.

Bee Farm was so beautiful you’ll find yourself excited to find out more of what the place could offer.

We’re already starving thus we decided to settle for dinner. Since I was still feeling exhausted due to our daylong tour, I settled for their organic honeyed halo halo and corn muffins while Gil had Honey glazed chicken meal and Go-Banana (Choco- Banana Shake).

Calvin suggested this halo halo and I must say, masarap nga! What’s special with this one was that ingredients were of fresh fruits’ tidbits and that the ice creams were also made organically from their very own The Buzz ice cream stand. The muffins were good too.

The foods were great! And Gil being the ‘maarte’ when it comes to foods liked them...a lot! (First time nmin kumain ng flowers like these...masarap din pala! hehe!)

We strolled around the place pa ulit after before we stayed on our suite as I teach Gil how to play sungka.

The following day, we were greeted by a great breakfast at their Cave Restaurant (poolside area). What we had were…

Mango pancakes, herb omelet, honey cured ham, papaya juice and hot tsokolate (too bad, strong cocoa taste nga pala choco nila). Kaboses ni Melai ng PBB ung staff (forgot to ask name) na nagserve samin. Nkakatuwa! =)

I was curious with their spreads as I heard a lot of good things about them. Free ang spreads when you order camote bread at P40/ slice. Cge na nga! =)

Two orders of camote bread with mango, pesto and honey spread…sarapp! (We never really like Pesto but this one was the most outstanding the the three!)

Good foods, great ambiance plus this lovely seat…what else could we ask for? ;-)

‘Tipid mode’ for lunch as we settled for nestle yogurt and crackers- our baon- for lunch. We’re actually waiting then for BBF driver to take us to Bohol Beach Club for a day tour and dinner (details of our BBC day tour on my next entry).

We were tuned to excited mode the following day, looking forward for another great breakfast ahead. We were in fact the first guests to come so we had our favorite seat again. What we had this time were…

Honeyed fried bangus, organic red rice, egg and watermelon juice. Gil settled for brewed coffee while I had kape mais (served with milk and pure honey).

We didn’t able to try bee farming (free for guests) and marine sanctuary activity (P80/pax) as much as we wanted kz kulang na time (scheduled flight that morning was at 9:55am). But we did able to go down the cliff, feel the rocks and the seaweeds. Hay…we were here for two days pero parang andami pa ring dapat I-discover (well atleast we have the reasons to go back hehe!)

Bohol Bee Farm offers the best and complete Bohol accommodation. No doubt! ;-)

Bohol Countryside Tour (Part 2)

8. HANGING BRIDGE OF SEVILLA

Bridge made up of bamboo and cable wires that hang approx 20 meters above the Loboc River that connects two barangays of Bohol. At first glance, parang sisiw lang nmn (it’s just a bridge!) but when you actually walk across it, nkakatakot din pala as it constantly shakes and sways. There were two bridges for the Entrance and Exit, so there’s no way na mkabalik ka from where you started other than cross the other bridge (unless you never cross one at all!)

9. LOBOC RIVER CRUISE

We finally gave in sa gutom haha!;) Thanks for Calvin’s tip again we opted for Riverwatch among so many boats available. They offer buffet lunch at P350 per pax, good food, and great music with live band while the boat cruises the greenish calm water of Loboc. Para kaming pinaghehele sa sarap ng simoy ng hangin! (We invited out Kuya Rejjy din syempre to join us).

On the way, we stopped by this area where local performers danced and sang and performed Kuradang- the traditional folkdance of the Visayan people.

Btw, we’ve met this nice lady, Ms. Petra who travelled alone from Holland all the way to Bohol. Hope you had a great time mam! ;)

10. HINAGDANAN CAVE

After a very relaxing lunch at Loboc River, we went spelunking (despite of Gil’s objection! Hehe!) I personally asked this one from Ritchie (and Rejjy) kaya!

Based on readings, this was discovered by a farmer when he tossed a coin into the hole in the ground and it splashed. They put in ladder (thus the name) and discovered a naturally lighted cave (light passes unto the wholes in the ceiling), with cool water spring of about 10ft deep among so many stalactites and stalagmites.

11. BOHOL BEE FARM

Bohol Bee Farm is a resort, restaurant and a farm offering a healthy lifestyle and agricultural development thru organic foods and materials. It is where everything was nice: from food, to view, to souvenir lines, to lovely surroundings, superb services and definitely a home away from home.

BBF is not actually part of the usual tour itinerary unless you requested for it. Knowing the fact, we decided to stay here nlng for the next two nights. Indeed a great decision we have made! (Blessing in disguise narin na fully booked na ung preferred resort nmin). Fares and accommodation at Bohol Bee Farm on my next entry! ;)

And since we're happy and satisfied with kuya Rejjy's service, sa kanya narin kmi nagpahatid sa airport on our last day. Try them, they're nice! ;)
